From En Garde to Avant-Garde

Tools of the trade for fencing include a metal jacket, mesh mask, glove and weapons 1) saber 2) foil and 3) épée.

While fencing has been around for centuries, it is only of late that Americans are beginning to excel at the sport. According to Christian Chensvold, writing for the latest RL Magazine (Fall 2011), fencing in the U.S. – with a little help from the Russians – is finally seeing a generation of athletes take a strong competitive stance. Besides the obvious historic appeal, there are endless opportunities to fetishize the sport through fashion.
