Nike Stadium presents, “Dark Sun,” a new solo exhibition about the NY surf community, by photographer and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos. The artist began his career in New York City assisting Andy Warhol and Irving Penn. His landscapes and portraiture are part of the tradition of street photography in which artifice and polish is replaced with the confrontation of raw existence.
True to form, Nike built a sculptural installation of waves and ramps for the show. This simultaneously echoes the subject of the photo essay, while offering up a playground for local skateboarders. “Dark Sun” is on view through 9.26.11 at 276 Bowery, NYC.
